Do the ingredients in Common Sense Herbal Products Super Lax Colon Cleanser help cleanse the colon? No--it only causes painful and often uncontrollable diarrhea, caused by irritation of the colon walls. Cascara sagrada is perhaps the most famous example of this--numerous studies have shown it forcefully stimulates the nerve endings that line the colon wall, causing it to contract and expel waste. Its effects are so dangerous that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned it from commercial sale in 2002.

Psyllium isn't necessarily better either. Several studies show that psyllium can become a choking risk for some individuals--it sometimes blocks off the esophageal or gastrointestinal tract. It can also cause an electrolyte imbalance, which can worsen some heart conditions. According to a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, cascara sagrada can also cause liver damage.

Verdict: It's pretty clear that this supplement is effective, but the issue here is its safety, not its efficacy. Several of its ingredients pose serious health hazards, and have even been banned by the FDA. You are urged to take caution when taking this supplement.
