Colonetix, as the name suggests, is a cleansing supplement that claims to target--and eliminates--intestinal toxins in the colon and digestive tract, which can reportedly accumulate due to exposure to environmental toxins and food additives. "The key objective of Colonetix is to help you to cleanse your colon and internal systems, promoting your body's natural ability to have regular bowel movements," says Colonetix's representatives on Colonetix.com. "This will allow you to release accumulated toxins and therefore, you may well feel not as weighed down in general, more energy, less bloating, less water retention, improved vitality, less acne even, and some weight loss." But Colonetix won't say how fast users should expect results, nor what specific results--such as how much weight loss should be expected--typically occur.

What ingredients are in Colonetix? Colonetix contains Oatvantage (54% beta glucan), Viscofiber (premium quality barley and oats), Corowise (natural plant extracts and sterols), Litesse, Fibersol-2, LinumLife (flax lignans), VitaVeggie (blend of carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, kale, broccoli sprouts, brussels sprouts, and onions), VitaBerry, Probiotics Hardistrain, psyllium, apple pectin, buckwheat fiber, grapefruit pectin, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium oxide, lactobacillus acidophilus, dandelion root, uva ursi, cranberry, pomegranate, acai and milk thistle.

Do the ingredients in Colonetix cleanse the colon? No--but nearly all of its ingredients are rich in soluble and insoluble fiber. According to the Mayo Clinic, fiber is essential for digestive health because it increases stool bulk and promotes faster bowel movements, which over time may correct constipation or irregular bowel movements. Soluble fiber also has an additional benefit--the prevention of cancers or diseases that primarily affect the colon, including colorectal cancer and diverticular disease. While its effect on the colon has nothing to do with the elimination of toxins, it may prevent the development of abnormal colon cells, which can contribute to a variety of deadly diseases.

Is Colonetix safe? Yes, but be careful if you have kidney disease or poor control over your bowel movements. Magnesium oxide is a prescription strength laxative, which can worsen certain aspects of the above conditions. Lactobacillus acidophilus has also been shown to increase gas production and stomach cramps.

Verdict: Colonetix may not contain the toxin-fighting power needed for effective colon cleansing, but its rich fiber content can lessen or reverse certain diseases caused by poor digestive health, such as constipation or irritable bowel syndrome.
