Constipation is a huge problem--The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) estimates more than 4 million Americans suffer from constipation each year. Yet the statistics seem to be on the rise, with most of the blame put on overuse of over-the-counter laxatives, which seem to make matters worse.

Aerobic Life's latest colon cleanser, Mag 07, claims to be a safer, natural alternative to these over-the-counter laxatives, however.

So How Does it Work? According to Aerobic 07, Mag 07 works by releasing nascent oxygen into the digestive tract, where it gently breaks up and softens impacted waste inside the colon. This encourages safe, gentle elimination, preventing or stopping constipation. In turn, the oxygen also increases the reproduction of healthy intestinal flora, preventing symptoms from returning.

But will Mag 07 truly work for constipation sufferers? Find out more below.

What ingredients are in Aerobic Life Mag 07? Aerobic Life Mag 07 contains magnesium oxide and citric acid.

Do the ingredients in Aerobic Life Mag 07 cleanse the colon? Yes, but it's not due to the release of nascent oxygen--magnesium oxide is actually a commercial grade laxative. According to the U.S. Natural Library of Medicine, magnesium oxide has been clinically shown to cause rapid emptying of the bowel, causing mild cramping and diarrhea.

In the short-term, magnesium oxide has not been shown to cause any complications, but long-term use has been associated with laxative dependency, which can cause the bowel's nerve endings to stop working.

This can worsen constipation. Sometimes, it can make constipation permanent.

Is Aerobic Life Mag 07 safe? No. Magnesium oxide has been associated with cramping and diarrhea even with short-term, moderate use. It may also change your body's electrolyte balance, making it unsafe for people with heart disease, a heart arrhythmia, kidney disease or liver disease. This supplement is also unsafe for pregnant women.

Verdict: Aerobic Life Mag 07's claims about 'nascent oxygen' may be unfounded, but it can promote bowel movements, a key part of colon cleansing. This doesn't mean it's safe, however.
