Grandma's Herbs Herbal Cleanse claims to naturally detoxify the bowel--a key cause of lowered immunity and gastrointestinal problems. But that's not all: this all-natural supplement also claims to tone and strengthen the peristaltic muscles, which control your bowel movements. They won't say how fast it works to eliminate toxins, but reviews posted on their website indicate this may be effective for short-term colon cleansing. There is little information about its other benefits.

What ingredients are in Grandma's Herbs Herbal Cleanse? Grandma's Herbs Herbal Cleanse contains the following ingredients: Cascara Sagrada (bark), Senna (herb), Aloe Vera (leaf), Buckthorn (bark), Licorice (root), Psyllium (husk & seed), Rhubarb (root), Alfalfa (leaf), Calamus (root), Barberry (root bark), Black Walnut (leaf), Butternut (bark), Dandelion (root), Flax (seed meal), Gentian (root), Marshmallow (root), Plantain (leaves), Prunes, Red Clover (hops), Sage Brush (leaf), Slippery Elm (bark), Blue Flag (root), Blue Vervain (herb), Calendula (flowers), Chamomile (flowers), Chicory (herb), Clove (bud), Fennel (seed), Ginger (root), Red Raspberry (leaves), Yucca (herb), Wahoo (herb).

Do the ingredients in Grandma's Herbs Herbal Cleanse help detoxify the colon? There isn't any substantial evidence proving any of its ingredients reduce colon toxicity. In fact, many of its ingredients are natural laxatives, which force the bowel to expel waste, causing additional problems in the gastrointestinal tract. Senna, a stimulant laxative, can damage the nerve cells surrounding the colon wall, reducing its ability to contract--a function needed to eliminate waste--and retain its natural shape, putting people at risk for increased constipation or infrequent bowel movements. Coincidentally enough, Grandma's Herbs Herbal Cleanse claims to treat this condition, although clinical evidence suggests it can actually make this worse.

Is Grandma's Herbs Herbal Cleanse safe? No. According to Something-Fishy.org, an eating disorder information database, laxatives can cause bloating, cramping, electrolyte imbalances, heart arrhythmias, irregular heart beat and dehydration. Continued use can cause kidney problems, heart attack and even death.

Verdict: It's pretty clear Grandma's Herbs Herbal Cleanse is a poor quality supplement with little to offer consumers. You're more likely to experience its less-than-pleasant side effects than its reported benefits, which include bloating, dehydration and cramping.
