Colon Kleen is a powdered, fibrous ready-to-mix beverage made from psyllium husks, which have been purported to help cleanse and detoxify the colon and bowel. But Colon Kleen doesn't claim it's been scientifically proven to help cleanse the colon--they actually claim it's endorsed by God. "However, we must tell you that Jesus the Lord, Yahweh, created them [Colon Kleen], HE created them for our health and healing," Colon Kleen reports. "Also, The Lord gave these to us and He intended them to prevent, mitigate, treat and cure diseases."
Health experts strongly debate the effectiveness of Colon Kleen, however--and for good reason.
What ingredients are in Colon Kleen? Colon Kleen claims its main ingredient is psyllium husks, but won't say if it contains other ingredients.
Do the ingredients in Colon Kleen help cleanse the colon? Psyllium husk has never been shown to detoxify the colon, despite Colon Kleen's claims. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it could be potentially effective for relieving constipation, a common digestive problem--but it's never been shown to affect the function of the colon.
"Blond psyllium is used as a laxative and for softening stools in people with hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and after anal surgery," says the NIH. "Some evidence suggests that blond psyllium alone can relieve constipation and improve stool consistency as effectively as preparations containing blond psyllium plus senna or docusate sodium."
With little proof of its efficacy, it's highly unlikely this product will be effective for colon cleansing.
Is Colon Kleen Safe? There are few side effects associated with its use. Psyllium husk may pose as a choking hazard, however, due to how it swells in the esophageal tract. People with swallowing disorders should not use this product. It may also decrease the efficacy of some drugs, such as tegretol, lithium and digoxin.
Verdict: Although Colon Kleen claims psyllium husk can cleanse the colon, this isn't necessarily true—but it is an effective reliever of constipation.
