Deep Sleep is a nutritional, all-natural supplement that claims to restore the brain's natural sleep patterns, reducing the time it takes to fall asleep, called sleep latency. It also claims to reduce excessive "mind chatter", which can make it difficult to fall--and stay--asleep during the night. The formula reportedly contains several all-natural sleep aids, including valerian root, chamomile and orange peel.
Deep Sleep contains fresh California poppy flower, fresh passionflower herb tip, fresh chamomile flower, fresh lemon balm herb, fresh oat seed and orange peel.
There is little scientific evidence it can help promote better sleeping patterns. WebMD.com, a medical website, notes that chamomile, one of its main ingredients, has been used medicinally to promote better sleeping patterns, though there is little to no evidence it can help restore the body's natural state of sleep. It may help people fall asleep, however. About.com also says that valerian only helps promote drowsiness, which can help people feel tired, but isn't necessarily an effective way to promote better sleep quality. Fresh lemon balm herb, oat and orange peel have never been clinically shown to play any role in insomnia or the promotion of sleep.
Deep Sleep's ingredients may contain some minor side effects. The most common effect is drowsiness, which can impair a person's motor function. It may also cause some stomach upset.
Deep Sleep has only been shown to decrease sleep latency--its effects on the overall quality of sleep are poor at best.
